Chasma!

Is that not strange! I came to know of the name of an actor while reading about his death.
Ravi Baswani! The classic "Jane bhi do yaaron" could'nt have been made without him. I never saw him without
a glass and I thought that his "chashm-e-baddur" was about a "chasma" when I was a kid. Eventually "Chasm-e-baddur" was his first movie
and I am one of the few lucky people in the world who had an opportunity to watch this one I guess. In 1980s, hindi movie industry produced a bunch of experimental films and most of them were not successful at that time. But those films produced lot of quality technicians as well as actors and of course Mr. Baswani was one of them. Although not all of them could make a room in the movie industry but that was not the end of the world at that time, why?, Television! many theatre actors at that time enriched the quality of TV serials produced by Doordarshan.
Ravi will be best remembered for the Kundan Shah classic "Jaane bhi do yaaron". Its one of the greatest films ever made in India. Overwhelming,
thought provoking and whatever adjective you say, will not be able to describe "Jaane bhi.." completely. It was asked to Kundan Shah many times that why it took 10 years to make his next flick. Whatever may be the reason it was a loss of hindi movie industry.
Anyways, Mr. Baswani worked in 30 films and he was more than outstanding. "Jaane bhi.." brought him a filmfare but that was'nt enough for recognizing his acting talent.
I did not know his name. I thought his name was something else. Now I feel so sorry for my lack of knowledge.
Actors of new generation will learn a lot from his acting. And I will find his all thirty films and watch. Also, looking forward to watch the movie directed by him.

  2. The last I saw of him was as Kankana's father-in-law in the "Yoon Hota to Kya Hota", the only movie directed by Naseeruddin Shah till date. He had a brief yet significant role, and had portrayed a beard that made him unrecognisable almost through the entire movie; I only recognised him in his last scene, at the airport.

A nice beginning to the blog, and thanks for informing me about the demise of Ravi Baswani. I was clueless, honestly.

  3. I came to know about Ravi Baswani reading your post. Then I googled about him. Rightly said, his face has been familiar to me for quite a long time, most unfortunately, because of an almost ugly commercial advertisement of "Btex" in which se sang a parody version of "Oye Oye".
And he was active till 2007 or something, as he acted in "Bunty aur Bubli", "Lucky", "Chal mere Bhai" etc. (Wikipedia).
Even if all of his 30 films may not be worth watching, but he will definitely be remembered as a part of the classic "Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron".
